Most of you out there know that I have tried a few blogs, in the past, and have at some point either ran out of stuff to write about or ran out of time to write. Or stopped caring. Whatever. I don't see you all writing blogs! Hah! OK, some of you are writing blogs, and they're good. It's not a competition. Well, I suppose it is sort of a competition. Again, whatever. Just subscribe to this and eat/buy/love my cupcakes.
Ahh yes! Cupcakes! The reason I am writing this new blog which I certainly won't give up in the next few months! Exclamation point! Cupcakes for me started as an experiment. I watched an episode of "Cupcake Wars" (attention producers of "Cupcake Wars" if you ever stumble upon this blog I would LOVE to be on your show!) and the urge to have a gourmet cupcake rose up in me like my chances of getting diabetes after all this baking! So rather than go to the nearest cupcake eatery and pay far too much for a cupcake, I decided I would make a little investment and try some of my own. The initial success of this investment I will leave up to you...
I know. It looks like the ghost of John Holmes finished on top of them. (Fun Holmes fact: He starred in 2,250 adult films. And claimed to have slept with 14,000 women, or 1.8 women per day...for 21 years. In actuality he probably only slept with about 3,000 women, or 2.7 new women per week.)These cupcakes (Chocolate with chocolate chips and an Orange Glaze frosting) were loved by my co-workers and inspired me to continue baking. I am ashamed to say it, but I did use a box mix for this batch. I was young and naive! I didn't know how simple it is to mix flour and sugar! I was lazy! (Feel free to switch that was out of the last sentence with "am") This was my last box-made-batch though, I vowed after these I would only bake from scratch.
(Green Velvet w/ Cream Cheese Frosting)I have kept that promise some 10 months later and continue to buy only the finest (whatever is on sale) ingredients and use only the highest end equipment (the KitchenAid mixer I bought from a garage sale for $40, be jealous) in my kitchen. While I have yet to receive any formal training I have managed to teach myself a few tricks including (did you really think I would put my tricks here? So you all could steal them from me?!) and (still no tricks. Figure it out yourself.) and there ya go! Baking made easy.
At the end of the day (or whenever I happen to have time to bake while not selling copious amounts of shoes) all I really want to do is bake simple, delicious cupcakes (with some cookies and actual cakes thrown in for good measure) and make people happy. Baking is something that runs in my family (though my family doesn't do a lot of running...coincidence?) and I'm proud to be carrying on the tradition.
So if you are reading this and feel that craving for some amazing cupcakes please fight the urge to go to the store, buy ingredients (or God forbid some shitty box-mix) and attempt making them at home. Let me know and I'll make you some. They'll turn out better and your friends and family will respect you more for having the foresight to seek out professional help.
Until next time, thank you for reading my blog and feel free to contact me at matt.rascher@gmail.com or on my facebook page, Matt About Cupcakes.
